Partial eclipse of the sun

Standard

So this evening there was a partial eclipse of the sun… wasn’t holding out much hope of capturing it as the weather had clouded over an hour before it was due…

Decided to head out to a spot where I knew I could capture the sun on its way down either way… rather be there and not get it than not be there and miss it 🙂

Was pretty bright but still potential for the sun to hide behind the cloud so stuck it out… took a snap of a lonely air ballon… would have a great view of the eclipse if it happened from there 🙂

Was really not looking good as the time for the eclipse approached….

…and then…

Yessssssss!!!…. 😀

Slowly and surely the sun broke out of cloud cover with the moon doing its thing…

Now I just need to get a milkyway shot before its too late 🙂

Transit of Mercury across the sun

Standard

So today Mercury passed in front of the sun making it visible with the appropriate equipment…

I took the day off with the intention of taking up to half a dozen shots so that I could put them together to give the even perspective… however… as this is the UK the weather (which looked ok in Fridays forecast) had other ideas and I was greeted with an endless blanket of grey skies….

I did try planning to travel further up the country to find somewhere I could at least grab a few shots but sadly without travelling half way across the country (not something I was looking to do unless there were other photo opportunities available so had resigned myself to the fact it wasn’t going to happen… until… the cloud cover thinned and the sun popped out around 12.30pm (BST) so I set up and grabbed a shot… this is around the time that Mercury was first visible…

Sadly this was the only shot I could get all day as it shortly clouded over again…

Facking weather!!!

Massive disappointment tbh but thats the way it goes…

Mercury is quite a small dot of course so fired up Photoshop anyway to make something of what I had..

Still… I got a lay in this morning so not a total bust lol..

Sunrise and silhouettes….

Standard

Grabbed the day off work as the day was looking nice and I have a fair few days to use up and thought it may be a good idea to get up early and catch the sunrise…

Was awake at 4am for some reason so dragged myself out of bed at 4.30am, got ready and set off just up the road… in fairness probably not the most exciting of locations but its on my way to work and you know how it is… you pass something at a time of day and you think… “that looks beautiful, it would make a great picture”… then when you make the effort to take a picture it never comes out how you originally imagined… anyway…

I was aiming for silhouettes this morning as I knew the subject matter on its own wouldn’t make for particularly exciting shots… couldn’t get the clean composures I wanted but its a start and looking forward to taking more… probably in the winter months when I don’t have to get up so early 😉

Sunsets at last…

Standard

Following on from this morning photographic antics the weather seems to have held out long enough for me to try for a sunset again…

My last attempts were thwarted by clouds (go figure) so I had high hopes for this evening… chose a different spot to the last time and set myself up…

I took a number of bracketed shots with the aim to HDR merge them in Lightroom and then tweak as required… everything went well apart from I misjudged the temperature dropping more quickly than I thought it would… I had left my coat in the car and while I had a few layers and a beanie hat on I was starting to really feel the cold by the end of the shoot and anyone that knows me well enough will realise how cold it needs to be before I feel the cold 🙁

Anyway… I managed to grab a few shots… happy with them too although due to the open scene its not quite got the impact of some but its a start and I learned a lot from the shoot (not least to remember my bloody coat next time!)

The last one kinda looks like a missile strike with the chem trail leading into the sunset lol…

All in all a good days photography 😀

Photographing the sun…

Standard

The sun is out today… I plan to venture out and have a go at a sunset pic later (will post if I do) but decided to put my sun filter together for an actual shot of the sun.

I had bought a spare lens hood for my 100-400 just in case I needed to mod it at all and bought a sheet of Thousand Oaks sun filter material. I marked up a piece of double thickness cardboard to act as a filter holder and cut it out with a craft knife.

Sandwiched the filter material between the pieces…

And taped it shut…

The filter holder just push fits over the end of the lens hood…

I set up just outside the front of the house for a test shot…

…and used EOS Utility to remotely operate the camera…

The result was…

Not too shabby… Not sure if I will still have to seal the filter to the lens hood somehow to prevent light bleeding in… it wasn’t noticeable in use this time so maybe I won’t need to but will keep an eye on it for next time I use it.
