Splash art… the story continues…

Grabbed a week off work… was hoping for a clear night to grab a last minute milkyway shot but alas it wasn’t to be… so I dusted down the drip rig instead 🙂

Been meaning to play with it for a while as I really want to try and progress my shots… I joined a Facebook group called Pluto Trigger Users Worldwide.. Pluto Trigger is a smart phone controlled box of tricks that acts as a trigger unit for a camera…

Has various trigger modes but one popular one seems to be the additional water drop valve kit and this group is full of people using this… its really handy as the info I could have done with when I first started splash art photography is now appearing here and the shots are quite inspirational

This time I also tried the suggested drop mix recipe of 1tsp of xanthan gum to 1ltr water… mixed in a blender this provides the base mix from which you then dilute further to use as the drop mix… the suggested dilution ratio was 250ml drop mix to 750ml water so I tried this and was pretty impressed with the results…

I also tried a suggestion for getting higher drops… this involved timing a second drop to land in the well of the first drop (as it crowns) which then creates a taller spout. I had a few goes dialling this in and found it a little hit and miss…

I did a short video as I often get asked about how it all works…

I have some ideas to improve on this though so will have another go soon but for now, here are the results…

Happy with the results… biggest issues this time around was lighting… its been so long between doing shots like this that I forget where the best positions for the flashes tend to be… the rig gets packed away as I don’t have the room to leave it up… this means that its a conscious decision to setup which is most likely why I don’t get to it too often… if it was setup all the time then I might be inclined to take more shots…

I might try and sort the rig out so its easier to setup… I have evolved it a bit over the years and its setup for three valves… having spent some time attempting to get this to work with mixed results I have decided to stick with one valve so will look to build a smaller more manageable single valve rig so I can focus on getting the technical bits sorted..
