Castle Combe Finals 2018

Last race of the season and I was not having much luck with 7D2… I had being playing with the focus points, going full manual rather than Av or Tv as I normally do and attempted to try out back button focusing as this seems to be recommended to motorsport photography

Last race I took 1000+ images and the keeper rate was ridiculously low… me and the 7D2 were not getting along at all… this time I decided to try baby steps… I reset the AF settings and used just the normal centre AF point… I also dropped the high speed FPS from 10 to 6… I was hoping that by doing this it would be a little faster than my 6D but be very similar to handle… I also reverted to using the half press shutter for AF rather than back button focus… old habits die hard I guess…

The day proved to be a challenge exposure wise with it being bright sunshine one minute to the sun hiding behind clouds and even going quite overcast at one point… I was shooting manual trackside but Av in the paddock… I also tried auto ISO for a while capping the upper ISO limit to 800 but still found metering to be a bit hit and miss so stuck to ISO 200-400 to keep the shutter speed where I wanted it and stuck it out at f5.6 which is the lowest the 100-400L will do at 400mm… Another thing I tried to do through the day was stick to 300mm focal length… I really would like a 300mm f2.8 prime lens but… they are prohibitively expensive and arguably image quality is no different to my 100-400L… it is however very fast at f2.8 which opens the door a bit creativity wise… one day… maybe 🙂

As is my way I won’t be giving commentary on the days racing, results are available from the TSL timing/Castle Combe websites but needless to say it was a great days racing made all the better by having my great mate and fellow tog Mark with me too..

Bill’s run of luck had taken a good turn… the Badgerwagon now being in a happy place we were just there to have a bit of fun and enjoy the last day of racing for the year…

Was an early start but was starting out to be a nice day…

Was a nice relaxed atmosphere in the paddock..

…and quite possibly my favourite car the day…

So onto the pics… last race I forgot my spare memory cards so this time I made sure I had all of them… but as is the tradition, I did forget something else… my spare batteries 🙁

Thankfully great mate Mark had some spare ones and I was back in the game…

I can thankfully report that I finally seem to have found my mojo with the 7D2…keeper rate was substantially higher than any other race day and its taken me a little while to process all the images but here are a few of the many that I got from the day…

First up, Formula Ford… pictures taken from Quarry and Old Paddock…

Congratulations to Adrian Slade on his monumental return to racing and grabbing the saloons overall win… and to Ilsa Cox for showing the Evo’s how its done in her Supercopa Leon

Really pleased with my output now… I did end up processing quite a few more images than normal (you can see the rest on my tufftography facebook page) but feeling happy that I have finally gelled with the 7D2… can start experimenting again ready for the next seasons racing… 🙂

One last thing… I did take the AE-1 with me too… needed to use up the rest of the film so took a few shots at Quarry corner… I just have to use up the last half a dozen shots on the Nikon too then I will send them in for processing… you never know there may be a few decent ones on there…

Photographing motorsport with the AE-1 is a bit of a challenge… with modern DSLR’s people have got it quite easy! 😉
