iPod++

As my 2 or 3 regular readers will know I have a long standing love of my iPod (despite being an Apple product)…

My original iPod video that I bought when they first came out in 2005 had a refurb here and I then built a broken 80gb iPod video into the MegaPod here

A friend of mine recently sent me his iPod video as its had lost audio… this is a fairly common issue with them and typically requires a replacement logic board…

Thats all well and good but they are pretty thin on the ground these days and almost always 30gb ones so have the smaller 32mb cache chipset… this got me thinking about mine and while I have a spare logic board I did really want to future proof myself a little in case either of my iPods gave  up the ghost…

So I bagged a cheap iPod classic 7th generation 160gb (last non iOS HDD model Apple made)… it was in good nick and fully functional… so obviously I took it apart and fitted the iFlash quad (same people that supplied the CF card adaptor for the MegaPod)…

This time I went for 4 x 200gb micro SD cards giving me a total of 800gb (730(ish)gb usable) of storage!!..

The gen 7 iPod classic is much harder to take apart than the gen 5 iPod video but after judicious poking around with spudgers it was apart

Removed the HDD and replaced it with the iFlash Quad loaded with the micro SD cards…

….after a quick test it was hooked up to iTunes and restored…

…a little different to the some 148gb usable of the HDD 🙂

I was a little worried that the battery would be a little tired and that I would damage the case trying to take it apart so I bought some replacement parts fairly cheaply to refresh the iPod++ at a later date…

I am going to get a new click wheel (possibly a red or black one) at some point too then rebuild it into the new case for a full refresh

Syncing my music took a few hours but managed to get literally all my music (lots of 2hr long trance podcasts) on there with space to spare

Ironically battery life seems ok so far so will leave doing the refurb for a little while as I have other projects on the go…
